How a subnet got a butt.

IThe Moment

On the sixth of September, 2026, TAO arrived on Solana as a launchable pair. This was announced in the way most important things are announced, which is by somebody noticing it in a dropdown.

Within the hour a token called Buttensor had registered against it. It had a 3% transfer tax, it paid holders in TAO, and it filled its curve in sixty-four seconds. Headlines the next morning credited it with moving the price of a two-billion-dollar network. The community site described itself as "artificial unintelligence". It was, by every measure that matters in this business, correct.

IIThe Base Layer

Bittensor's great insight was that a base layer is only interesting for the things you build on it. TAO exists so that subnets can exist. Subnets exist so that somebody can be Subnet 69.

Buttensor, by the same reasoning, was a base layer that had not yet been built on. Somebody had to. It was never going to be anyone serious.

IIIThe Number

Subnet 69 on Bittensor is called Herald. Its stated purpose is an on-chain marketplace that "only pays for genuine media coverage". Journalists are the miners. Coverage is the work. Emissions go to whoever wrote something real.

We read this and understood immediately that it was a description of us, if you replaced "media coverage" with "holding" and "journalists" with "anyone with a bag". Herald pays for genuine coverage. Buttnet 69 pays for genuine sitting. We would like to be clear that Herald is a real subnet run by real people who have nothing to do with this, and that we consider their tagline the finest piece of accidental meme copy in the ecosystem.

IVThe Mechanism

There isn't a new one. Every transfer pays 3%, in and out. The platform turns it into TAO and hands it to whoever is still sitting. The dev wallet is printed on every page of this site and pays the same 3% as you do if it ever stands up.

We considered a treasury, a roadmap, a DAO, a points program, and a second number. We decided the first number was doing enough work.

Holders, sellers, and the people who came for the joke and stayed for the TAO. The group is open. The CA is pinned. Admins never DM first. Traders mine, holders validate, emissions in TAO.
